Way back in July, I held a baby shower for one of my long-time best friends.  (I was also 8 months pregnant for my new little peanut.)   I used my very own party planning checklist to get the ball rolling:

Party Theme and Location: I knew my friend was planning on a gold, mint, and blush colored nursery for her new baby girl.  I also knew that she likes simple and elegant things and doesn’t really go for over-the-top decor.  Using this info, I decided to make use gold and shades of pink as the primary color scheme and add mint as an accent color.   Since we planned on having the party at my house, there was no need to “scout” a location, but I did have to begin planning the layout of where food, gifts, sign-in table, and entertainment would be going.

Plates, Cups, and Napkins:  I knew that I would be going with paper dinnerware because guests would be carrying them around the house.  I thought I would use different colors in the dinnerware but later decided to use only light pink.  To add some visual interest, I used a variety of prints, like polka dots and stripes.  I got most of my dinnerware at Dollar Tree and Dollar General, my go-to stores for colored decor.  They have a really big (and inexpensive) selection, and I don’t feel too bad if I overbuy – which is pretty much always.

Party Favors:  Since the baby’s name was going to be Reese, my friend suggested incorporating Reese’s Pieces into the party.  This was just the place to do it!  I ordered small baby bottles on Amazon and filled them with Reese’s pieces for guests to take as they were leaving.  Simple and easy!

Cake:  I looked at quite a few cakes before selecting a beautiful white cake with fondant dots in the theme colors.  The cake is technically three tiers, but the bottom two tiers are the same size.  This created a modern and unique design, perfect for “behind the cake” photos!  For the topper, I used a glitter “R” that I found at Hobby Lobby (in the clearance bin, no less), which was the perfect glam topper for such a modern and simple cake design.  This isn’t technically a cake topper, but this just goes to show you – inspiration can be found in a variety of places!

Entertainment:  Traditional baby shower games can be a hit with certain crowds and a complete bust with others.  First, I looked at the guest list and assessed the ages of who would be attending.  We had children, through 20-30 year olds, and those in their 50-60s.  This was such a broad audience!  So, I decided on a couple of games:

  1. Diaper Raffle: Each guest received a card in their invitation to bring a pack of diapers to the party.  They were instantly entered into a raffle to win a prize.  The only drawback is if the mom is particular about what brand of diapers she wants to use or if she wants to cloth diaper.  Make sure you check this out with the mommy to be ahead of time.
  2. Headband Station:  We had a variety of flowers and bows set up with a hot glue gun for guests to make a headband for the new little baby.  I bought stretchy, soft elastic from Hobby Lobby and pre-made headbands for newborn, 0-3 months, 4-6 months, and 6-12 months.  This was such a huge hit with the younger 20-somethings!  headband stationCheck out my awesome Hobby Holster from Holster Brands that’s holding my glue gun in place.  I absolutely love all of these products for my hot glue gun, my curling iron, you name it!
  3. Shower Games:  We played two games – Gift Bingo and Name that Nursery Rhyme.  Gift Bingo is played by handing each guest a blank bingo card and asking them to fill out gifts they think the new mommy will open.  Then, as she opens her gifts, guests mark off anything they wrote on their card as she opens it.  Once someone has Bingo, the game is over.  Name that Nursery Rhyme is a game where guests answer questions based on some common and some not-so-common nursery rhymes.  The older guests really loved this one!

Once I had these things figured out, the rest of the theme fell into place.  I just loved adding all the personal details, like this sweet sign-in canvas I created for her to hang up in her room:
