I’ve never been a fan of shorts. Before kids, I never wore them at all…I preferred sun dresses and jeans and pretty much shunned shorts of all kinds.
My hair dresser says this thing about how her thick thighs chew her shorts up like a stick of gum. I feel that on so many levels.
And then I had two sons. And shorts became a staple I had to figure out. In the words of Marie Forleo, “Everything is figureoutable.” And dang it, I was determined to find shorts to wear on our trip to Walt Disney World over Spring Break.
So here’s some major tips for all the fellow thick thigh beauties out there:
Size up one size from your jeans, pretty much always.
I wear a size 14 short in my favorite jeans from American Eagle. So naturally, I started looking at American Eagle for shorts, but I sized up to a 16 to make sure I had length in the leg and room for all my junk in the trunk.
Go to multiple stores, even the ones where you don’t like how their other bottoms fit.
I used to love Old Navy jeans, but then after finding American Eagle jeans I stopped wearing Old Navy ones. They gave me this little pregnant pooch that wasn’t all that flattering and the mid-rise was more like high-rise. #oompaloompastatus. But then I found a few pairs of shorts at Old Navy this season that I loved! I also found some great shorts at Walmart this year, which was so surprising to me. So you just never know. Be open to trying them on.
Pull on shorts are great…in theory. When you’re curvier, it’s not so cut and dry.
I have a small waist and thick hips and thighs. My upper body is usually medium when my lower body is usually a large or extra large. Pull on shorts tend to ride up to my natural waist when wearing them, which causes the whole “cheeks hanging out the bottom” dilemma. But I don’t count them out. I look for a medium length and I try to get them in a linen material that will stretch as I’m wearing them. This way, I can buy the size I wear and not size up.
I have a few more pairs that I haven’t completely tested yet, but I will keep you guys updated as to the chewing gum effect of each pair. 🙂 Let me know in the comments – do you have any shorts for thick thighs that you LOVE, fellow curvy ladies? I’d love to give them a try.
